Mutul

An alternative theory explains that the name Tikal may be derived from the words ti ak'al, in the Yucatec Maya language, meaning "at the water well". There is another ancient theory explaining that it comes from the Itzá Mayan language and means "place of voices". Tikal is not the ancient name of the site, but rather the name adopted shortly after its rediscovery in the 1840s. Glyphic inscriptions in Maya script on the ruins refer to the ancient city as Yax Mutul, meaning " first mutal". The rulers of the city wanted to distinguish themselves as the first city by bearing this name. The whole kingdom was called Mutul.
