Tesla EP

  • Artists Dave Cortex, Josh Harnois
  • Release Date 2012-11-19
  • Labels Funkedge
  • Catalog FNKDG001
  • Description Funkedge's debut release comes courtesy of label boss Dave Cortex. Those that have followed Dave's decade-plus music career will recognize influences from throughout his musical evolution: Beginning as a Washington, DC-based funky house DJ, Dave gradually expanded his skills into music production as well as progressive and tech house, eventually earning global recognition for his unique cross-genre sound. This EP aims to showcase the stylistic range of both Funkedge and Dave Cortex with a collection of sounds that are both contrasting yet linked.

Tesla, as the name implies, is pure energy: an upfront fusion of funky, progressive, and tech house, resulting in a haunting yet uplifting big room club tune. A subtle funky rhythm starts things off, steadily building and filtering up until the track is swallowed by spooky vocal stabs and tweaked-out synths. The energy keeps rising and twisting until it culminates in a massive drop, bringing in the kick and super-sub bass with full force. The groove gets going nicely, adding a massive stab and techy drums. As we hit the bridge, the groove strips down to the core essentials, leading into the main breakdown with a classy melodic twist. The energy intensifies with crazy glitch-out effects until the track is about to burst out of the speakers -- and then it drops into full-on madness.

The second track, Desert, is a bit more straightforward tech-house affair, with hints of classic house and techno. Driven by pounding drums, bass, and a mean riff, the track swiftly moves along, an old-school techno pad creeping in and out of the background until it eventual envelopes the entire track. With a danceable rhythm continuing throughout, we find that this tune works best if played in your set directly before or after a massive breakdown.

The final track of the EP, So Fresh, is a preview of Dave's collaboration with fellow DC-based artist Josh Harnois. Coming from a classical background, Josh discovered EDM several years and quickly dove in. The two of them quickly found magic when they combined Dave's house grooves with Josh's inspiring live music. So Fresh features Josh on the sax, and merged with Dave's bouncy yet deep funky house groove results in a vibe like no other -- enjoy.
