Always an artist with "dynamism and power" in his armoury, over 75 production credits under the Kill Minimal production guise amply illustrate Gamboa's predilections for the techno and minimal genres so synonymous with the German capital. Indeed the Madberlin imprint forged from the identities of his former and adopted homes has seen a reputation carefully nurtured. Using the Ioan Gamboa moniker to usher in a new era and a "new sound", the name was chosen to reflect a more melodic approach to his craft.
Success has been rapid and far-reaching. A debut in the shape of 2011's "Spiral/Hope" EP immediately found its way onto Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat imprint, remixed by the Argentinean himself and followed by a raft of releases on Somebody's Story, Replug and Henry's Saiz's Natura Sonoris. Gamboa's work has lit up the underground progressive house scene with incandescent ferocity while simultaneously performing a live show that has sought to create a "musical puzzle" seen across the globe at "Sonar Festival" and "Klubbers Day" in Barcelona and Madrid, along with further assignations in Japan and Argentina. Finding a natural home on the Particles imprint, 2012's "The World Outside" provided a launch pad that was to see the Game of Thrones inspired "Fire and Ice" EP prove to be one of the year's highlights, leading to three further releases and six remix treatments from artists such as Ad Brown, Asten and Andrew Benson.
Now, the next chapter in Ioan Gamboa's narrative is completed with the launch of a debut album, inspired by the work of Serbian physicist, Nikola Tesla, and the science of 'cymatics'. Based upon the notion that, "all the universe is energy" and that what we hear, feel and touch "are vibrations with a specific frequency that make everything different and unique", has led Gamboa to push established musical paradigms, experimenting with "different sounds and track structures". The result is "Vibrations": eleven tracks of unrivalled imagination and aural excellence.
Dynamically charged and fizzing with melodic intensity, the shimmering shining "Signs and Wonders", "Inner Circle" and "Roots" develop a wall of sound that fills the room with multi-faceted melodic layers, throbbing bass and electro-statically charged percussion that combine with off-kilter broken beats to dizzying heights. The straighter moments provided by "Sleepyhead" and "Colours" ooze dance floor credibility as searing lead lines pierce the upper frequency spectrum with their emotive motifs, while "Muse" reminds the listener of Gamboa's skill with percussive groove, providing a work that is the epitome of the modern sound championed by the underground DJ elite.
An inspiring album, full of ingenuity and a cornucopia of sound design has seen Ioan Gamboa's "Vibrations" generate a fundamental frequency that resonates excellence.
