MalLabel Music is starting 2013 off right with its’ first release of the
year from its newest resident, G Jones. Greg Jones has been hard at work
this past year, his newest release, Transmissions showcases a broad range
of styles from the young producer, from hard hitting midtempo to
melodically hype 808 bangers.
The EP opens with the anthemIc track ‘Overnight’. Lush melodic leads and
piano chords float over a twitchy purple bassline, which gives way to a
minimal, trap influenced beat, outlined by shimmering arpeggios. The title
track, ‘Transmissions’, follows with vibrating melodies and reggae stabs
bouncing atop a heavily swung beat. While ‘The Heart Cave takes the EP in
an entirely new direction, with soft bell melodies echoing over thick pur
ple bass lines and saturated electronic chord progressions. The EP finishes
with The Widdler's old school dubstep rework of Transmissions, which
decontextualizes the melodies and chord progression of the title track over
a pounding 142 BPM drumbeat.
This release showcases G Jones' wide range of musical styles, while
staying melodically complex and firmly rooted to the dance floor.
‘Transmissions’ epitomizes the freshest sounds coming out of the west coast
and is not to be missed by fans of the bass music culture.
