Amam is the new label from bright young Italian producer Alessio Mereu, who has already made a name for himself releasing on labels like Contexterrior, CMYK and Toys For Boys. While Amams first release found Alessio going solo, this time hes half the duo of Pet Soul Boys alongside Barcelona-based Coyu -- you might have heard his productions and remixes that have appeared on Diynamic, 2020 Vision, Liebe Detail and Saved. The debut PSB single from earlier this year,
Calypso Soul on Hypnotone, was played by the likes of Paul Woolford, Nick Curly and Italoboyz. Not so bad for a couple of guys in their early 20s!
The famous Italian comic book character Corto Maltese was born to a Spanish prostitute and a British sailor.
The track Corto Maltese, though, is the bastard studio baby of Alessio and Coyu, a feverish concoction of perky house patterns, abstract vocal outbursts and spooky jazz-tinged keys. On the flip, Berliner Daniele Papini (Systematic) offers a stomping, darker interpretation for when youre in an evil mood!
For the digital jockeys out there, Amam offers the download exclusive Doble o Nada (double or nothing), structured around a bouncing steel drum melody that unfolds in fractals while swirls of percussion fill the atmosphere. Alessios own groovy edit of the cut focuses more on the low ends, bringing out the underlying hypnotic element.
