"Hours/Cells (Extended)" is the latest single to be released from Space Captain's debut album 'All Flowers In Time'. With thoughtful arrangements of sweet indie-pop guitars, trumpet breakdowns and cyclical layers of background vocals, this beautifully crafted release takes Space Captain to new heights. "Hours/Cells (Extended)" follows a sold out album launch show in Brooklyn and impressive support for the album from Sofar Sounds, Deli Magazine, Okayplayer, EARMILK and Indie Current.
As the "country hit on the album", the charmingly lazy and folksy "Hours" showcases the bands versatility, offering a cool balance of soft and hard elements in a moment of calm. Harmonious fluttering guitars build into a heavy drum breakdown that fades out at the end of the track, mirroring the quiet that comes after an argument. The emotional intelligence expressed through the honesty and vulnerability of Maralisa's song writing enchants throughout this track, interlacing the sweet moments of nostalgia that follow a relationship with the steadfast knowledge that you must stand your ground. "Cells (Extended)" tells a story closely intertwined with "Hours", with the lyrics crafting an intricate tale of the bittersweet sensory nature of nostalgia, exploring the moments that pull us back to a particular time, place or person; "The main theme" Maralisa explains "is exploring the phenomenon of nostalgia and love in general, and how being with someone new can trigger old memories so easily". Written originally as an interlude track for the album, this extended version was developed and recorded in an evening at Great Time Studios in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. A myriad of instruments give new life to the track; with drums courtesy of long time Space Captain collaborator Donnie Spackman and a scintillating guitar solo from band member Gray Hall, while the voice of Maralisa Simmons-Cook takes on a life of its own, tucked deeply into the texture of the mix; "We recorded my best 'The Great Gig In The Sky' impression" Maralisa says.
