In an era of here-today-gone-tomorrow producers and endless multitudes of DIY record labels it is rare to find a writer / label relationship that has survived the test of time. Whether it is via their collaboration on the joint-owned Pornographic record label or sharing the DJ booth at parties across Europe, Cristian Varela are Marco Bailey enjoy such a relationship. This two-track EP (released five years after Part 1 appeared on MB Elektronics) provides the label with its sixty-fifth release and further cements the special connection between two of most enduring and dynamic talents in Techno.
Menorca is a genuine roof-raiser that challenges the norm by taking its inspiration from the past. Fusing a combination of influences as diverse as shimmering Italo-Disco melodies and epic Progressive House tension, the result is powerful track that stands out by not conforming to current trends.
On the flip, Sidechain keeps up the energy and evolves the melodic theme of the EP. Built around an abrasive bassline and percussive groove a solid platform is established to give maximum impact to the quirky but oh-so-good organ pattern to smash its way into the mix with arm waving euphoria.
