Only in his early 20s, Portugal's Cardao takes his cues from greats like Jeff Mills and Carl Cox and distills them into his own special sound. He has been turning out such techno since 2009 and his raw, industrial forms have won him fans all over the world as well as at labels like Naked Lunch and Illegal Alien. Now he joins the !Organism ranks and immediately fits in with their talented roster.
The perfectly tripped out and melodically rich 'Logic Ends' kicks things off with a stripped back yet impactful sound that is all about raw hats and molten keys. The influence of Mills loom large on this one as it carries you through a bleak night sky, and next cut 'Obscure' is just as standout. This one is more in your face with its bigger, more physical drums given centre stage. Around them all manner of supple synth lines rise and fall and take you with them every step of the way. Brilliantly designed water droplets are the more intimate details that keep this as heady as it is physical.
The last great original is 'Anxious', which is a jostling, perfectly pressured techno cut for the dead of night. A bleak landscape is filled with eerie and spiky bits of sound design as a prying synth lurks in the shadows. Abstract and machine made yet infectious and funky, it is an archetypal techno track that is sure to blow minds.
London based techno veteran and Children Of Tomorrow label head Arnaud Le Texier remixes with a real sense of frenzy. His lines get loose and ragged as they rumble all round a rooted drum line, which is sure to encourage some flailing arms and real WTF moments on the dance floor.
With this EP !Organism has unearthed a star of the future who really comes over as a singular techno soundsmith.
