A pulsating solo effort from electro crooning man-child and Cut Copy Ben Browning is the shiniest, newest addition to the Cutters stable of artists.

The evergreen man and aficionado of classic and futuristic pop is of course no stranger to the Cutters crew. Browning cut his teeth as enigmatic frontman of Melbourne space rock jam band the Ca$inos, churning out undiscovered-classics ranging from 60's tinged pop to kraut style jam outs. After playing with various other projects including cutters alumni Damn Arms, he was called upon to perform his aforementioned 'live bass' duties for Cut Copy around the time of release of their breakthrough album In Ghost Colours and has subsequently become a fully fledged member of the group which continues to tour like a beast possessed.

Prior to starting on Cut Copy's most recent album Zonoscope, however, Browning began penning tracks for a solo release, culminating in the new 12-inch EP which is to finally see a release through Cutters Records.

For a guy who once recorded a whole album of original Christmas-themed material in a matter of weeks when short on gift ideas for friends and family, the two year gestation period for this EP has been comparatively exhaustive, but certainly worth the wait. After most of the basic tracks were home spun, the talents of Gus Franklin and Haima Marriott (Architecture in Helsinki) were enlisted to add production and shimmer to the finished product. The pair re-effected and mixed the recordings, with Franklin and Lachlan Dickie (one half of film directing duo Krozm) also providing live-drums to some of the original tracks. Meanwhile, Cut Copy's own Dan Whitford reached into his collection of vintage synths to provide keyboard programming, producing some of the classic keyboard tones herein.

The lead song I Can't Stay opens with an almost calypso guitar lead, before opening up into bouncing rhythmic bass-driven club-pop, the likes of which wouldn't have been entirely out of place on the recent Cut Copy album. The vocal is trademark Ben Browning: delicately strained melodic and harmonic stylings, with a seeming fragility which belies its true versatility.
Evidence for this is no more clear than on Mistaken Images, an intricate piece of longing with Browning's unmistakeable but unexpected turn of melodic phrase. It's the sort of tune Jeff Lynne might pipe through the ship's intercom to drift off to, shortly after he's set the controls to 'Oblivion'. Feels Like is a smooth piece of work propelled by a bass line which pops in all the right places. The EP is rounded out by two moody instrumentals. Bullet Island is a cosmic 'builder', complete with guest sonic-muscle from Shags Chamberlain (of Melbourne band Lost Animal). And the mellow, slow groove of Night Dunes takes you to exactly the sort of place you might expect a song entitled Night Dunes could take you.
