This year Detroit's DJ 3000 celebrates Motech Records' 15th Anniversary.
Motech's curation has followed a simple ideology from its inception: sourcing quality cuts from hard working artists. This mantra stems from label head DJ 3000's own outlook from day one, which has fostered some incredible relationships over the years. So what better way to kick off Motech's celebration of 15 years in the game but with something special and close to home. The result is the 'Union EP'.
The 'Union EP' is aptly named to represent how much relationships mean to DJ 3000 and his label, and highlight what binds his Motech family - it's not an aesthetic but a feeling, a commonality rooted in the like minded pursuit of diversified and excellent music. The eclectic nature of this four tracker confirms this. Techno isn't a particular drum sound or tempo, it's a futuristic endeavour. You've got to be an explorer, trailblazing in search of fresh forms. Gritty, raw, soulful, and ethereal are all words that can and should be associated with innovative Techno.
With this in mind, the EP opens with a track from the man himself. DJ 3000's upbeat stomper 'Don't Go' is an unadulterated funk-filled, tough-House-meets-Detroit-Techno excursion that's ready for serious dancefloor impact.
On the soulful side Detroit young-blood, Mazepa answers DJ 3000's funky contribution with his own 'Cass Corridor' evoking the expressive vibes of some of Detroit's classic Techno with strings aplenty on this high octane track.
Next up, Pittsburgh Track Authority's Preslav Lefterov delivers his first track as Preslav, a moniker he's reserving for harder-hitting Techno as opposed to the Housier sound of PTA. His stripped down 'Driver' is hypnotic with its less is more vibe.
Closing the EP, long-time label cohort Esteban Adame, who cut his chops with DJ 3000 at Submerge / Underground Resistance, brings us something different still. His track 'Political Gain' goes on a no nonsense lo-fi trip to great effect.
The 'Union EP' will be followed by Motech Records 15th anniversary compilation in June.
