Low Battery Recordings is back and kicking off 2014 featuring the exceptionally talented Llieno! LB003 showcases the New Yorker's unique skills with some help from collaborator Steve Cox as well as outstanding and transformative remixes by Jan van Lier and Chemical Play. Llieno's "Shotgun Girl" is an exercise in minimal tech-house, and displays his talent in the genre. "Shotgun Girl" pairs chugging drums and percs with a subtle bass line that keeps the energy flowing. As the track evolves, vocals build up an outstanding tension that is released so well alongside its techy breakdowns. It is minimal, yet amazingly rich as the track progresses. "Shotgun Girl" is a track fully prepared to keep everyone moving throughout in a way that many artists could only hope to replicate. Llieno then pairs up with Steve Cox for "Devil in Disguise". The huge bass line and solid kick carries this track throughout. The hoover synth line kicks "Devil in Disguise" into overdrive with sporadic vocals building up the suspense. The breakdown drops out the kick and the bass and brings in full melodically tense lyrics that drop right back into the heavy drums and bass before cooling down. Jan van Lier's remix transforms "Shotgun Girl" into a track of his own. Adding his own bass and synth lines provides a great mix of melody and noisy-ness. This less minimal take on Shotgun Girl is a high energy tech-house anthem that keeps the energy building throughout. Dropping new synth elements as drums and noise ascend into reverb gives a sense of perpetual forward motion that culminates in a full on barrage of techy goodness. Rounding out LB003 is Chemical Play's remix of "Devil in Disguise". Chemical Play strips down and rebuilds "Devil in Disguise" from the ground up. He abandons the synth and takes on a more minimal and subdued approach while still maintaining a dark and suspenseful energy. Adding several drum elements and slicing carefully placed vocals alongside atmospheric hints of melody helps build this remix into a mysterious and powerful track that comes into focus at just the right moments.
