Portraits sees Cacao heads K.E.E.N.E. & Gonzo-Gonzo in the curator seat, showcasing legendary artists who they draw inspiration from and constantly play throughout their sets. Their first choice in the series is one of Detroit house music's most prolific players, Rick Wade. Despite his low key persona, Rick boasts a career spanning more than two decades and an equally impressive back catalogue filled with gems for crate diggers everywhere. When it comes to his production chops, it's easy to hear from the first spin how effortlessly groovy Rick's style is.
Both 'Discolicious' and 'Still Angry' stand as timeless proof, as they now unfold on the EP in a newly masterized version. On 'Discolicious' upbeat strings chime along warm melodies, evoking a time back in the days when the mirrorball was king. For the reprise, K.E.E.N.E. turn up the groove a notch, amping the dance appeal with a more dynamic take on the original. Pensive, yet utterly melodic, 'Still Angry' channels a laid back atmosphere, with punchy bass and harmonic scratches keeping the mood lifted. Gonzo-Gonzo breaks in on the remix, taking the track's main loop and turning it into spiralling earworm. One trait stays constant throughout the release: the old school house flavor that is mesmerising in the originals is aptly kept at bay in the remixes and rearranged into current day dancefloor weapons.
