Utilising the minimum amount of elements to create something dark, deep and hypnotic, Deep Souls set the tone for a diverse VA Sampler 1 from Ambious Records. Following the JHB duo's Tranquillo, Dix's Skylark is the perfect fusion of House, Disco and Acid - a proper dance floor track with funky bass, organic tombs, chord-y ambience and a hi hat sample that shaped an entire industry. Middle of the lot, Sangoma hits hard while maintaining an Eastern influence as strings creep up on Khubu's synth bass and xylophone mashup. Nick Supply then takes us back to 1951 with another unexpected take on the 4/4 beat, showcasing the synth-y cleanliness and prominent bassline melodies that define his sonic narrative. Phill Kullnig brings an end to the EP with a suitably named Rollercoaster - an energetic exhibition of intricately worked drums that take us on a journey with no destination.
