Known for their unique approach to reggae, Glasgow's Mungo's HiFi have always been influenced by wider sound system and dance music culture. They've distilled this passion into new single Back In The Dayz, a homage to 90s rave and breakbeat, featuring Bristolian emcee Gardna and sultry London singer Catching Cairo.
Over a jungle-esque break and a bassline sounding like a vibrating warehouse roof, Gardna and Catching Cairo share evocative memories of raves and dances they've enjoyed. The sounds, friendships, fashions and refreshments that connect the communal party experience flash by in a heady cocktail hit of nostalgia and optimism. The lyrics were cowritten by London reggae singer, and Mungo's collaborator, Kiko Bun.
Like all Mungo's productions, Back In The Dayz is simultaneously looking back and facing forward. It's a love letter to the rich traditions of UK rave culture, but also a glimpse towards the time when we can all be free to party again.
