The last year has been an exciting one for Soma Records, with Joris Voorn, Samuel L. Session and Itamar Sagi all contributing to the label; Slam & Silicone Soul rising to the top of their game, The Black Dog delivering another outstanding studio album and the burgeoning artists, Harvey McKay and Gary Beck leaping forward from their introduction via the SomaBeta concept at the tail end of last year. This year also brought nostalgia with reworks of Slams classic, Positive Education, coming to light. This originally started with Soma-friend Fergie, asking if he could have the parts for PE to rework for an appearance at Somas club night, Pressure. Fergies Just For Pressure Mix was born and destroyed a packed dancefloor. From there Paul Ritch asked, as did Marco Bernardi, as did DJulz, who delivered not one, but two outstanding versions of the original! Silicone Souls self-titled album grabbed the attention of peers & press a-like, with 5/5 reviews and DJ feedback flooding in for months after release. As just announced Silicone Soul have been nominated for DJ Magazines Best Of British 2009 Awards in two categories; Best Album & Best Producer, rounding off an exceptional year for the Glasgow duo. The Black Dog have also delivered another astounding long-player, Further Vexations, following up on their award-winning 2008 album, Radio Scarecrow. The Black Dog have continued to push electronic boundaries with a darker and more dance-floor orientated album, that flits between glitched-out techno, sub-heavy dubstep and hed-fuk electronica. On their most recent EP, We Are Sheffield, the mighty Northerners, Autechre, deliver a beautifully wild and intricate piece of music. The 2010 compilation brings the best of these delicacies together, combined with several stunning guest EPs, collaborations and remixes. Itamar Sagi stepped forward with his storming tech-house gem, One Million Oaks. While Funk DVoid & Sian teamed-up once more to bring two warehouse-esque standards, A Raven Wheeling Overhead (Vocal & Dub mixes). Material Series honchos, Mihalis Safras & Mark Broom joined forces with Kuipers to produce the jacking Jelle, and Slam reworked Samuel L. Sessions seminal Can You Relate. Taken from his Conversations With My invisible Friends LP, Lets Go Outsides brilliantly cocky Machismo, throws a touch of classy house into the mix. Gary Beck features twice on the compilation with an original piece, Tijuana, which brought the lazy-Latin sound of summer to the forefront, plus a remix for his good friend Harvey McKay. Chalk and Cheese apply to these tracks, as the remix for Mr. McKay lends nothing to the sunbeams that emanate from Tijuana, but instead breeds dark, gnarling bass and gushing percussion, more typically known of Garys productions. Slams Ghost Song is also reworked by the on-form Joris Voorn, Silicone Souls Dust Ballad II by Ripperton and Master Hs Magic K by Christian Prommer. Artwork comes courtesy of Glasgows Ewan Leckie, the winner of an online competition to design the 2010 packaging. This artwork stood out for its eye-catching originality and inventiveness.
