'Surplus to Requirments' is an interesting and eclectic mix of Dubstep tracks that move from heavy wobble-ridden hard hitting rhythms, to softer subby and bubbly break driven numbers. Despite his newcomer status to music production, Shatterfreak has shown a flair for experimentation as well as a wide range of influences. Tracks like 'Subsistence' and 'Trip N Blip' sit happily in the subbier range for their basslines with evolving percussive elements and scattered highs holding the attention, and imagination of the listener throughout the tracks. Songs like 'Back From the Brink' and 'It is Useless to Resist Us' contain hard hitting wobbles, driving beats and scatching highs. Influences move from hints of reggae and oriental sounds, to early Dubstep flavours, with knods to the recent emergance of high wobble madness resulting in an album that is emotive, exclective and intriging.
