After last year?s steady trickle of remixes and one-off singles, Durham, NC-based electronic producer Big Spider?s Back (aka Yair Rubinstein) returns in 2014 with an all-instrumental EP entitled Ssoft, his first release on Seattle-based label Hush Hush Records. Combining classic house and techno rhythms with playful, synth-based melodies and the dense, psychedelic atmospherics reminiscent of previous Big Spider?s Back releases, Ssoft is the 29-year old artist?s strongest statement yet. The EP?s production was initially inspired by Roland?s quintessential line of 707, 808 and 909 drum machines, whose timeless sounds predominate through each of the 5 tracks. These classic sounds are combined with contemporary influences, ranging from Kompakt?s soft-focus ambience, to the skittering electronics of artists such as Luke Abbott and Four Tet. Ultimately, Ssoft marks a compelling point in Big Spider?s Back?s sonic trajectory, one that unites radiant melodies with buoyant and lively beat production.
