"My Body Politic" was originally released in November 2013 on the Love Army LP,
"We Are Not For Sale," which received national acclaim through Redeye Distribution. The chorus was written by Caitlin Cary in a blazing flash of rage when she learned that North Carolina's "Motorcycle Abortion Bill" had passed; the law severely restricts the state's clinics' ability to provide affordable, legal abortions. Cary knew she'd arrived at the "singalong" section of the song, but she chose to turn to her longtime friend and colleague, the poet and hip hop artist shirlette ammons, to bring gravity and a sense of history and place to the verses. What emerged is a compelling mashup of "girl group" aesthetic and feminist poetry protest rap. The song quickly became an anthem of sorts for the progressive pro-choice women and men who march and demonstrate outside the walls of the NC General Assembly and around the state. The song is flanked by five diverse remixes by producers from North Carolina and abroad.
