If you measure the quality of hip-hop on whether or not it brings out your shuffle, pay attention to Hyrdroponic Sound System. From the hilarious lyrics of "Ray's Bodega", to the true words of "Play The Role" and "Distractions", these tracks are a fresh mix of soul, funk, spanish guitar, spacey synths and deep, indie hip-hop flavor. The b-side's gonna surprise you with two lusciously smooth downtempo tracks entitled "Modern Atmospheres" and "Disconnected". Modern Atmospheres drops laid-back, Chemical Brothers styled beats, that get softened up with synth pads, jazz flute and guitar, along with subtly spoken vocal loops. Disconnected goes for an old school IDM-tinged flavor with lo-fi bass kicks and snares over a backdrop of vinyl static and mellow organ that gets joined by flanged and reverbed vocals. "Choice Cuts Vol. 1" is definitely eclectic. Highly recommended.
