Catharsis: the purging of the emotions or relieving of emotional tensions, especially through certain kinds of art, as tragedy or music. Sidebottom's debut work on Cenote, the Catharsys EP, is a collection of samplings that represent significant events and emotions in the artist's recent life. His hope for those who might listen to these tracks, is to spread an emotional contagion of sorts, and to provide relief from their own experiences and reality; they are an escape. The three original tracks span a variety of styles and ooze with subtle complexities and atmospheric nuances, as intricate melodies dance around and pull-push with the surrounding elements to provide aural conflict resolution and indeed, offer a catharsis. Cenote brings back label friends Sam Jaspersohn and After Touch to reinterpret The Line and Sand & Clay respectively, along with Blackwöh, a Toronto-based music mangler and regular collaborator with Sidebottom, who puts a darker spin on Consequence.
