It's been 15 years since 'Tales Of Dirt & Sparks' was originally released on CD and even longer since a lot of these tunes appeared in the vinyl racks of stores across the world. The online stores of today didn't even exist back in 1999, so we thought its about time the album finally made it's digital debut. We sat down, re-listened, re-loved and remastered each track so that they sound great on todays hardware.
Since 'Tales Of Dirt & Sparks first release, many have rocked dance floors across the world, some of the biggest names of their day; Andy Weatherall, Dave Clarke, Fabio Paras, Anne Nightingale, etc loved and played these tunes. Some have featured in Hollywood movie trailers (Superbowl Tomb Raider ad spot), on computer games, DJ mix albums and surprisingly diverse range of compilations.
Originally when we sat in front of the Akai S3000, opened the filter cutoff on the Memory Moog or boosted the kick drum on the Soundtracs Ghost desk - our plan was to not only to record a classic but also push the genre. A high point for us and perhaps a moment when someone recognised what we were striving for was when 'Mondo Scuro' was cited by BBC Radio 1 legend JOHN PEEL as one of his favourite records of 1995. Many others have talked about this hybrid of House and Drum and Bass made overnight in a garage in South East London as the first ever breaks record.
And its not just you guys - who got it and moved to it the first time around - that love what we do. When The Ericsson MUZIK Awards were broadcast live on BBC 1 November 1999, superstar DJ and pop icon BOY GEORGE was asked what he believed to be the best record of the year, his reply Arnica by Dark Globe".
And in case you didn't know, the original idea for the album came about mid 1999 when we decided that we wanted to collect together the best of our singles from the last four years, plus some new tracks which showed the direction we were headed. It pulled together tracks from our days on Leftfield's Hard Hands label, from our own Violent Drum imprint and the 1999-2002 period we spent on Meat Katies Whole Nine Yards.
'Tales of Dirt & Sparks was something we were and are still very proud of. We want you to feel proud of it too.
