VAVAV is the alias of musician, DJ, composer and arranger Emil Bovbjerg. Classically trained in contemporary arranging and composition, The New York resident born in Copenhagen, spends most of his time as one third of live electronic trio N/UM; a group that in recent years has drawn fast-growing international acclaim for their innovative sets of freely improvised explorations in electronic music. As a DJ and producer VAVAV is analog based with a taste for melodic rhythms and bass lines; a warm, stripped down sound, simple and clear of cosmetic effect. With careful attention to arrangement and intricate composition his music is as much influenced by Gil Evans and Oliver Nelson as Jeff Mills and Villalobos and ranges from mood draped, rhythmic soundscapes to playful club tracks. VAVAV’s passion for house and minimal is evident in his music, markedly shaped by improvisation and experimentation. However, his experience as an arranger, writing scores for both small and large ensembles, utilizing classical and modern orchestration techniques with rich harmonic structure, makes for an uncommon artistic path and brings about a character in his electronic productions that is at once both contextually integrated and highly recognizable.
