Chris Archee’s first ever album was the Muppet Movie soundtrack. The next he asked for was Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry. All he wanted to do was play the guitar, especially when his punk friends told him he was terrible and to come back when he was good. He got good but bands weren’t enough. Seeing his first DJ’s play house and Jungle inspired him to want more than the band, to create a soundtrack beyond his chosen instrument.
Mixing records came in the beautiful warm days of summer in Western Australia in 1999. Amazing DJ’s, amazing festivals and crew willing to band together to swap records, to tell stories through their work. Archee ate it all up. Hip hop. House. Jungle. Breaks. Two Step. Nothing was out of bounds.
The 2000’s changed everything. His funk rock band FTC broke up. He began to be asked to DJ hip hop at skateboard comps. Out in the big big world people took what the previous Kings and Queens of electronic music made and turned it into something new. They took sampling to new heights. Began to chop to turn to mash and computers started to make new things possible. Yet as a kid who grew up in the 80’s he has never forgotten the wonderful, amazing music of the last 2 decades of the 20th century.
Tungtide was born in the middle of this. 2 crazy dudes mixing guitars, beats and synths from all styles to deliver a tripped out of body and soul experience. Then came the 2 Fat DJs, who made nasty electro, trip house and breaks work through their sets, culminating in one last last Southbound festival closing show to 3k +.
At the end of the amazing run Archee was there, mixing parties, clubs festivals, wherever people wanted to hear his music. He began again making his own productions, as varied in style as his roots. Hip hop, house, breaks down-tempo. Nothing is off limits. They began to filter into his sets.
Archee thinks that like him people want to hear a story in DJ sets and in their music. They want to dance, they want to laugh to smile, to feel it in their hearts. Sometimes you want listen to a different style at a different time, feel a connection to each moment in your life.
Chris Archee binds all he does in colour, by the shades and hews he sees in his mind when he mixes, produces and plays live.
Every musician wants to tell a story, this is his.
