Abu Ashley made his way up the DJ ranks through the caverns of some of the greatest dance venues in New York City. Through his residencies at Le Baron, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Le Bain, and T BA under his recently retired club moniker DJ Cougarskin,Abu mastered the craft of moving a crowd and defining a vibe.On this debut EP,Abu leads off with an experimental single that rediscovers his Middle Eastern roots. Titled “Asmaa,” an ode to the archaic social stigmas still prevalent in the Arab world,Abu succeeds in crafting a deeply emotional and politically-charged yet club-friendly masterpiece. His EP and seasoned vinyl mixing have already garnered a lot of support from DJs and producers around the world. Most notably, Resolute resident and Drumcode don Alexi Delano, who showed support in the form of a remix for the titular single. On this remix, Alexi takes the mournful chants and heart-felt strings of the original and flips it on its head, ending up with a primetime upbeat dance floor anthem. The past few months have seen Abu spin at Output in Brooklyn down to the Shore Club in Miami and share the decks alongside dance music greats like Matthew Dear, Tiga, Pearson Sound, Dusky, Midland, Untold, Galcher Lustwerk, Walker & Royce, and Kim Ann Foxman.
