Few artists have succeeded in quickly defining their own unique and original style and then staying true to this approach without eventually becoming entrenched in a tried-and-tested formula. Thomas Muller is one such exception. Since his first release on BPC three years ago Thomas has developed an unmistakable signature sound. His distinctive approach to programming beats and love for detail in sound design leaves an impression of constantly moving parts that remain in one place. The resulting tension instils Thomas' tracks with an irresistible and curiously mechanical energy. Having established and refined his musical trademark on previous EPs and remixes - including those for his label-mates Telefon Tel Aviv and Cormac - Thomas enters new territory with each track of his new EP Neurones. The opener features the archetypal Thomas Muller sound: "One Hit One Night" conveys the tireless operation of a machine a machine built from high-precision components perfectly tuned to one another. It generates a constant output of energy that you cannot escape for a single second. "Paris Asylum" begins like a typical minimal track. Is this Thomas turning to convention? Not in the slightest. Nervous vocal snippets and rasping samples in place of hi-hats announce the manic mechanics of a bona fide Thomas Muller track. A third of the way in and it has penetrated every neuron, taking complete command of all your senses. At the mid-way point some spooky pads announce the switch into top gear, as all the energy valves are opened at once this is Thomas Muller at his most expressive. Here's a tip for the dance floor: don't ask questions, dive straight in and let your body groove! The flip side takes proceedings in a more unusual direction. "Sub Summer" begins with a funky beat and brass samples! But before you realize just how far down the garden path Thomas has led us, the track takes a deep breath and opens up a vast space. Beeps and bleeps, whirring synths and enchanting vocals bring Sub Summer to the boil before suddenly locking into a restrained house groove, then coming to an unannounced conclusion DJs be warned! "Rude Way For Sweet Heart" quickly leads us back into familiar sound territories, but has its own surprise in store. The mesmerizing but deliberately cool precision of the previous tracks is given a more free rein here with the use of a cushioned, bouncing beat, dub echoes and playful piano interjections. The movements of Thomas' mechanics are just as meticulous, but here they have a softer touch, turning Rude Way into a wonderfully laid-back tune for calmer moments.
