La Cantera EP
Great Stuff Recordings
Following on from his acclaimed Hyperion EP on Sebastien Leger's excellent Mistakes Music last year 2 itself one of the biggest selling labels in techno 2 Italy's Siwell rocks up on Germany's Great Stuff with two tracks of bubbling funk to further cement his reputation.
The title track gallops along like a rampant horse from the word go, with a murky bassline swirling beneath a percussive groove that blends the hypnotic qualities of machinated techno with just the right amount of tribal lightness of touch. Drum fills, pitch-shifting cymbal rides and warped snippets of FX and riffs fill out the textures, with plenty of subtle little touches keeping the interest levels up. It's meaty and potent, finding just the right balance between heads-down seriousness and dancefloor mischief.
The Calling goes a mite deeper, with another high-octane rolling groove sliced open by a dreamy, hollow chime synth riff in the breakdown. It's an unexpected moment of hypnotic beauty, and a cunning diversion from the fast-building energy that's about to be unleashed. Cue a big old drum roll and a mother of a drop. Lethal stuff.
