SATORI In To Void (Bla Bla Records, Amsterdam) It would be to easy to categorize Satori as a techno producer. Of course there were the clubhits with his partner in crime El Mundo, there were long hot nights, exuberant dancefloors, pounding beats and pure ecstasy. But the person behind Satori has another side, a side that also wants to pour his personal impressions into sound. Meet In To Void, a remarkable debut in every sense. Forget about those dancefloors for a moment, the place where Satori left his mark so clearly these last years. Place yourself in the person Djordje Petrovic, born form a Serbian father and South African mother, raised with balkan music, afrobeat, jazz and world music in all shapes and sizes. Someone who educated himself in playing guitar and piano and also wants to showcase this other side of his music. Produced in the moments in between his sessions with El Mundo a series of tracks came about that characterize Satori most accurately. Deep, sensitive and worldly, but mostly compelling and utterly beautiful. In To Void is a musical moodboard, an emotional blog if you like, where thoughts and impressions by Djordje Petrovic force themselves to you in a hypnotic trip, subtle but irresistible. First steps He didn't realize what was happening when he made his first Satori solo track over a year ago. In A Blink Of An Eye simply was a response to an incident, a good friend that suddenly had to be rushed to the hospital with a cardiac arrest. I was just having a party on a festival somewhere, says Petrovic. Not much later I was standing in the hospital, fearing for his life. It made me realize how life can change in a blink of an eye, how sharp the contrast between party and sadness can be. That same night I made this track. Although led by emotions the track still has clear connections with the work from El Mundo & Satori. On the dancefloor it could do the job perfectly, just as the tracks Petrovic would produce after this (Balasana, Uni Si Tra, Soft Spring) would know how to get things going. Things really got more loose after these tracks, says the producer, who only now realizes he started exploring his own path more and more by that time. Instinctive process Kinhin is one of those tracks. Shaped by sensitive piano chords and a jazzy atmosphere Satori takes you far away from the club. In his case to the memory of his Zen teacher Sjef de Roos who he lost to cancer. Or Brittle, a somewhat mysterious track with vocal samples from a press conference about the war in Rwanda. Some kind of weak plea denying the whole genocide, even though 200.000 people were massacred just the weekend before, says Petrovic. It made me see how brittle peace can be, before you know it things can change. Not that he's an activist or something, it's simply impressions he transforms into music. When I feel or think something I make a track to go with it, tells Petrovic. A very instinctive process actually where I don't think about a possible audience but only about what I like myself. A book, a movie, a radical event, anything can lead to something without me taking any musical genre into account. The music he picked up and made in his youth also plays an important role in this. World music and jazz are always there, including a collaboration with jazz musician Fat Fingers on track Yes, I Can't, while Uni Si Tra features a guitar melody Petrovic recorded when he was still a teenager. In short, In To Void is an album taking Satori off the beaten path. An ultimate listening record for techno lovers, released on Daniel Sanchez' Bla Bla Records, which was already a home for club as well as experimental sounds but definitely covers new grounds with this release. No dancefloors this time, it's a musical moodboard like you've never heard before; Satori delivers its most stunning moments.
