Leading by example, Vintage and Morelli kicks off the sampler with "Come Home," a sensual, deep-meets-progressive classic, not unlike some of the most recognized past works by the versatile Serbian phenom. The infectious, titular vocal hook arrives quite early in the arrangement, as a deliciously funky groove -- served with maximum swing -- takes hold of the listener and relentlessly induces head bopping for the next seven minutes. A patient crescendo leads to an unexpectedly poignant breakdown, as VandM crafts a symphonic soundscape, replete with stirring strings, piano chords, and, ultimately, a climactic flute lead, which seems to wistfully evoke the ancient civilizations of the Indus Valley.
A collaboration between Argentine pals (and esteemed label veterans) Airdraw and Jo.E, "Lightness" is a gorgeous peak-hour number, which deftly punctuates its high-octane groove with numerous contemplative and emotive moments, offering listeners both rhythmic power and a sort of sensitivity and melodic "grace." It's not surprising, then, that Vintage and Morelli picked "Lightness" to close the "Only Silk 05" compilation. Airdraw and Jo.E weave delicate melodies throughout the composition, culminating in a profoundly touching orchestral solo in the main breakdown. The drop to follow is both ecstatic and heartbreaking.
Finnish label newcomer Audioventura delivers a lush progressive trance anthem in "Generation," one of the most explosive (and euphoric) cuts to grace "Only Silk 05." Roaring out of the gate, this peak-hour stormer treats listeners to a rapturous chord progression, the stadium-rocking drop of which is especially exhilarating.
Closing out the sampler, the perennially innovative Blugazer offers the intoxicating "Thalael Myrn," which serves as the intro track of Vintage and Morelli's "Only Silk 05" continuous mix. A broken-beat groove, combined with a distant vocal effect and a variety of other atmospheric and rhythmic flourishes, create a mesmerizing soundscape in the early going. Yet, the full majesty of this composition is not revealed until the breathtaking lead theme arrives at the two-minute mark, which sets the listener adrift in a current of sonic bliss.
