Northern Englands, Stem Records, returns this with Alveol & Genovevas Sleeping Flower EP, backed with reworks from Lake People, and Herzel & Genoveva.
Fledgling imprint, Stem Records, has taken huge strides since its launch in late 2012, dropping original content and remix material from many forward-thinking artists, showcasing an intriguing A&R approach behind the imprint. Although only six releases deep here, the likes of Lawrence, Neville Watson, 6th Borough Project, and Breach giving props is telling of the quality of its output. Here it pushes forward with a single from Ludwig Cimbrelius aka Alveol & vocalist Geoveva Kachurkova, simply known as Genoveva. The duo have notably released with Dubwax and Mule Electronic, and here, deliver more of the interesting, tripped-ou material theyve become known for.
Title track Sleeping Flower, opens the single, built around dreamy soundscapes, dubbed out vocal lines from Genoveva, bumpy, off-kilter drums and a profound low-end depth which adds an insistent drive to an otherwise stunning amalgamation of sounds. Things progressively bloom to around the four and a half minute mark, where Genovevas angelic vocals are brought to the forefront, adding a further charm and unique appeal to the record to open the 12 in style. German producer Lake People then turns in a cleverly contrasting remix of Sleeping Flower to follow, opting for a more direct 4/4 approach with weighty shuffled drums, rounded sub tones, and glitching synth sweeps leading the way. Spaced out echoes tucked away in the background then add an expansive atmosphere to things, as Lake People instills some musicality with jazzy Rhodes melodies, resulting in a remarkable rework.
Opening the latter half of the single is a prodigious twelve-minute cut entitled, Close (Veil Of Maya), again tipping the focus towards melodic beauty, with a warm, ethereal vibe. Cosseting pads lines and Genovevas sultry vocals intricately bloom and retract throughout, while penetrating low-end tones and psychedelic, delayed chord progressions further fuel the dynamic groove. Then to close the single, Herzel teams up with Genoveva following their Dubwax single The Action Of Staying in 2012, to reshape Close, the duo opt for crunchy distorted percussion, and elongated pad lines here, creating a restless, raw interpretation.
