Emanating from an unlikely base of operations in the Southeastern United States, TMINUS008 signifies a fundamental release in the catalog of Terminus Audio as label boss and DJ/Producer Jason Mills delivers two slabs of dark, unforgiving Techno - backed by a seasoned array of remixers around the globe; including fast-rising Italian star Joy Fagnani and stalwart producers Fresh Otis and Emir Hazir. A musician, collector, and performer for most of his life, Jason Mills has created music under the guise of several aliases - including TMINUS001's "Rift Sequence" as LXVI. This marks his first original Techno EP using his own name and his statement is made with the deadly "Ptyrix EP".
The title track "Ptyrix" is an absorbing, monolithic piece designed with the goal of encapsulating the listener in a world of its own. An enormous kick drum anchors the track; as titanic, wet synths gradually mutate and wash over a brooding bass line, chopped pitch-shifted female vocals, and haunting atmospherics. Thick, cracking claps keeps things plodding forward as filtered percussion and effects swirl in and out of the arrangement with a sensual fluidity. Serious without being sterile and packing plenty of surprises, "Ptyrix" is an ambitious Hard Techno journey that should find a home in the selection of forward-thinking DJ's abroad.
Next is WAM (We Are Music) founder, Italy's Joy Fagnani - who has been on quite a hot streak as of late with a series of stellar releases on numerous labels and support from the who's who of Techno - with his take, or Repaint of "Ptyrix". Fagnani stays true to the spirit of the original but adds a some tricks of his own - channeling this into a condensed floor burner. With a subtle, sexy build - a lush, vibrant pad and lead line open in the key drop, ensuring an audience that will be worked into a sweat before things are said and done.
Vienna's Fresh Otis, a techno institution himself, turns in something quite different. Much funkier and with the accompaniment of familiar samples, this should prove quite useful to DJ's. A percussive tom line is a mainstay in much of the track and keeps it grooving as Otis effortlessly weaves a hypnotic sequence of elements and effects, culminating in what is a certified dance floor bomb.
"Silent Eyes" is a primal, yet futuristic Techno tool from Jason Mills that pulls no punches. Tracky and effective, a pummeling kick and clap combination form the foundation for the controlled chaos. An infectious chirping synth serves as the driving factor here along with a warping bass line and a cast of rugged hi-hats and systematic 909 percussion patterns. An ideal cold, calculated, minimalistic Techno weapon.
Rounding off the EP is Terminus Audio artist and standout producer, Emir Hazir from Turkey who creates a slightly more accessible and polished vibe here. A dark and yet extremely funky bassline establishes an attitude that brings to mind shades of The Crystal Method in their heyday with modern sensibilities. This a grooving all-purpose Techno workout and makes for a great addition to any DJ's arsenal.
Terminus Audio is quickly proving to be a globally formidable label and this is a proud addition to the growing, robust catalog. Where in the world will we wind up next?
