The Australian artist Groj, lives in Montreal now, his birthplace, where he studied Psychology and Electro-Acoustics. Groj weaves organic sounds with synthetic sounds, establishing a graceful, gentle tension that borders on imaginative structures as can be witnessed with his remix for Max Cooper on Traum. Groj gave his debut to the electronic scene in 2009 with a release on Klangwelt. His track "Edlothia" was remixed by Ryan Davis and he was supported also by Max Cooper. His track Arnica Hypericum (Mattheis Remix) was played by James Holden at the Awakenings Festival in Rotterdam. Releases on Loki and Manuel followed, Groj has also played the precious Canadian Mutek festival. Hi Motte EP opens with the title track "Motte". The German name for moth. The moth has been used for comparisons in classic German song writing with Marlene Dietrich's. "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss auf Liebe eingestellt" in the Movie: Der Blaue Engel" and stands for an addiction to love, frailty and disastrousness.Grojs track establishes right from the beginning an airy, gas like lightness that lingers somewhere above the ground but also incorporating melancholia and a fragile and twisted melodic approach. The track is build up to a point where it resembles something gloomy and doomed, which is deconstructed and destroyed towards the end. The track draws on a mixture of abstract sounds that can hardly be traced and creates this amazing tension deep inside."Motte" is highly emotional and places you right from the beginning in the middle of its plot .Be aware, this is a bit of a masterpiece. "Orfevre" sounds more classic and played, prefers a stronger continuity with its melodies end makes a connection to the shoe gazing 4 AD indie productions of the past, switching between happy and sad. "Phoenix" is a real adventure through headphones. It opens with an electro acoustic beat section and nice stereo shaped spaces. Groj breaks here with classic techno structures making drastic compositional transitions that give you now clue of where the track will lead you. In the course of it, towards the end it leads to a Morricone like soundtrack! Track 4 features Jesse Somfays remix of "Motte". Jesse transfers the fragile original into an techno epic using a strong hypnotic beat programming and modulating sequences from the original. All here is worked in the way that it shows an organic kind of progression and refers with that also to his most recent releases. Track 5 is Avus remix of "Phoenix", an abstract ambient remix with entreating synth sounds in the composition (that will link it to the original) and an occasional beat intervening. The track restricts itself to a minimum of elements and works with a certain kind of randomness, and might as well be conceived as a minimal composition in the original sense of the classic composers in the 7oies. Magic Pandas remix of "Phoenix" rounds up the EP with a wonderful atmospheric broken beat rhythm construction that settles in a string composition which evolves drastically during its course and could easily be called a soundtrack. The remix brings together Idm influences, progressive ones as much as carrying a note of techno. Feel free to dive into this remix!
