London-based Thomas Feriero, AKA Avatism, didn't buy his first vinyl when he was ten years old, nor was he born out of the love of two underground jazz musicians. He had an extremely dull and standard childhood and can barely play the drums. Yet somehow, he is able to formulate tech-house tracks that are classy and artful while remaining dancefloor-functional. After catching AMAM head Alessio Mereu's attention, Avatism joined the roster last year along with The Selph for a collaborative EP.His latest solo venture, the Mindset EP, begins with "Jigsaw Poet", delivering thick, meaty bass frequencies and a Spartan pulse with classic groovebox sounds, paving the way for some unpredictable split-second flashes of piano and organ. Halfway through, the track intercepts some distant radio signals with a distinguished voice offering some insight on Allen Ginsberg, a notorious all-night raver kid if there ever was one. "When You Feel" escorts the listener to a cabaret with its swingy, slinky aura and the somber vocals that mirror the androgynous voices of jazz divas from decades past. On the flip, Cynosure superintendent Mike Shannon writes a "Letter to the East" (the eastern hemisphere? or is that the East Side of Detroit?) with his remix of "Jigsaw Poet", introducing an overall more synthetic mood and prowling melodic lines. Finally, as a digital bonus, Avatism offers "Mindset", further showing his love for doom-laced grooves and esoteric spoken word.
