Don Dayglow continues his sonic explorations into Disco, House and Electronica with Majlis. Perhaps it's the 15+ years of crate-digging, perhaps it's his pedigree as a funk and psychedelic breaks DJ (under the Ewan Hoozami monicker), or perhaps it's simply symbolic of an artistic spirit. Either way, the Particle Zoo boss renders 4 exquisite cuts that represent exploratory surgery at the fulcrum of intertwining styles. The outcome is a heady, transcendent blend of influences that contribute to a whole that is part all and part none of the above.
Kicking things off is the eponymous Majlis; a delirious, poly-rhythmic affair with distressed pads drawing the listener in to be met by a deep, rumbling bass-line, guitar licks, organ stabs and analog synth tapestries.
Avian raises the tempo and chills the mood, bringing some Balearic sunshine to proceedings. A late-bloomer perfect for sunset or sunrise.
Don's idiosyncratic approach sees him eschew a straight four to the floor in favour of syncopation in the closing two cuts. In Kakrafoon, he also takes on mic duties and delivers a dreamy, analog indie-dance bomb full of saturated drum machines and live synth-work.
EP closer Nightlight joins the dots of the Majlis EP. Fusing heavily swung poly-rhythms, pitched vocal cuts, plaintive flutes and guitars with raw bass and squelchy, compelling synths, it's a cut for late night party-goers of a more discerning nature.
