Six and a half years after the release of his last album "Into Submission" on Tresor (Tresor.173), James Ruskin returns with "The Dash" (Tresor.233), delivering prodigious new tracks that are not only stunning in contrast to his earlier dark and urban techno but even startling as the tracks unfold in bold innovation. The track "Lahaine" is taken from the album, revealing a new, very personal and elegant Ruskin who shows determined, decisive craftsmanship and a nascent approach towards production techniques he describes as trying to "bridge the gap between music designed to listen to and music I would use as a DJ at the weekend".

"Lahaine" hits hard with no-nonsense, capable, and precision beats, swathed in high-hats and snare action that breathes like a techno dragon. This is Ruskin territory that we're accustomed to yet there's an edge peering through the percussive slaps, reminding us about a great deal of emotion involved in this work. Turning the record over we're treated to an outstanding, magnetic remix by OVR - the artistic partnership of James Ruskin and Karl O'Connor aka Regis. The two of them have been collaborating on live shows for several years and this reworking sends chills down your spine. A cleverly induced breakbeat glides with precision beside very spacey and celestial fringes, creating impulsive and mesmeric movement in your body before quieting down to a minimal landing back on earth. A deliciously stylized 12" that, based on promo copies, found its way into top international DJs' sets and entered the top of the techno charts weeks before its release.
