Vipul Angirish has remained an important part of the Wind Horse Records family since his remixes of "Guru Funk" and "Dharma Voyager" for label founder Hamza. The two met on the night club circuit in New Delhi and immediately formed a friendship based on their mutual love of house music and a desire to help it grow in India. Under Hamza's mentorship Vipul Angirish has become an accomplished producer in his own right and an important addition to the Wind Horse roster.
With "Dream Surfing," Vipul's willingness to collaborate with other musicians welcomed an accomplished keyboardist named Aman Nath into his studio. Vipul felt that his tracks should be a bit more atmospheric and expansive, combining the groovy rhythms he loves playing as a DJ with the evocative soundscapes he enjoys listening to. Hamza introduced Vipul to his longtime friend Aman Nath, a classically trained keyboard player who had been already converted to the worlds of synthesizers and electronic music. Vipul's chemistry with Aman was instant, and "Dream Surfing" became the satisfying result. The track begins with a house beat and bass groove, expertly inviting listeners to the dance floor. As the song develops more musical elements are subtly introduced and a floaty, sonic warmth envelopes the rhythm. The build culminates to a gorgeous synthesized keyboard breakdown which showcases Aman's contribution to "Dream Surfing," soon giving way to Vipul's potent groove.
Vipul's debut release featured "Persian Love" which showcased the oud, a traditional Persian instrument not often (if ever) heard in house music. The track gained a lot of attention for the relatively new producer warranting a remix from a more seasoned artist on the Indian scene. Vinayak^A is known for his cinematic house sound as heard on 2008's "What's Stopping You" single on Baroque Records and his many remixes, earning repeated club play from jocks like John Digweed, Oliver Klein, and Hernan Cattaneo. Vinayak^A took a break from recording his artist album to lend his signature sound to "Persian Love." Mysterious and alluring, this version almost downplays the rhythm in favor of oceanic pads, pulsating synth lines, and effected percussion hits. Yet the track is effectively driving, and the musical sections ebb and flow in the mix like a dramatic scene in an epic movie. It's quite an ambitious late night effort.
As a bonus, the "Dream Surfing" single also contains two DJ Tool tracks which contain keyboard elements heard in the song, useful for "on the fly" remixing.
All in all, "Dream Surfing" is an exciting step forward for Vipul Angirish and is the first of many collaborations with the accomplished Aman Nath. Stay tuned to Wind Horse Records for more from Vipul and future communiques from the burgeoning house music scene in India.
