Singer/Songwriter/ Producer Scott Jacoby's unique musical vision is deeply rooted in the past and fully connected to the future. Having always marched to his own rhythm, Jacoby has thrown his disparate influences in a blender and created a sound and style that is all of his own. Scott Jacoby was born on Halloween night in New York City, 1971. Raised in the suburbs of NYC, he started playing piano and drums at age of 10. High school and college saw him drumming in bands of all styles, and composing on piano. After two years of medical school, Jacoby dropped out, bought studio gear with gig money and schooled himself in the art of production. Scott Jacoby's sound is a combination of styles. Drawing on soul, jazz, r&b, electronica, funk, rock, bossa-nova and blues, his music weaves between genres and color lines, beyond classification but rooted in tradition. Artists like Donny Hathaway, Prince, Frank Zappa, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder all inform Scott's musical journeys, as do his extensive travels through Africa and Latin America. The pure musicality of bands like Earth, Wind & Fire, Sly & The Family Stone, The Beatles and Steely Dan have served as departure point for Jacoby's distinct brand of songwriting savvy, groove sensibility and 21st century eclecticism. The album, Before Now, is comprised of songs written and recorded between 1998 and 2002. Early tracks were recorded at The Shit Factory with Scott's touring band, which played frequently circa 1997/98. The more recent selections, recorded at Maze Studios, are virtually the work of one man. The music is a layered tapestry of interlocking grooves and rhythms, with melodies both simple and unpredictable. Set within thick, harmonically rich chords and r&b voicings, Jacoby's lyrics are at once searching and concise, sarcastic and earnest, exploring themes of love, loss, injustice and honesty. To say that Jacoby is a one man band would vastly understate the case, as he writes all his own material and handles all points of production and performance on his work. Jacoby channeled his early success into the creation of Maze Studios, a NYC recording facility that houses his massive collection of vintage keyboards. As an acclaimed producer, he works extensively, sculpting the sound of artists such as Maiysha, John Stephens, Maya Azucena and Julia Greenberg. As a recording artist, he has previously released Evolution of Creation by alias VMS Universe in 1996 (Vamos Records) and Insert by EJECT (with Maze co-owner Allen Towbin) in 2000 (Blue Maze Entertainment). Jacoby has written and produced songs for television shows and commercials and will score his first feature-length film, Praxis, in June 2003. He signed with IRMA Records in 2003. Before Now, released on Moonbeat Recordings in early 2004, is his international debut.
