EXT. SMALL VILLAGE ON RIVERBANK- THE SKY DARK WITH THUNDERSTORMS, HEAVY RAIN A group of twelve men, foreign settlers, argue with a native man, MESKWAA. Tensions are high. The leader of the twelve, is BERNARD. BERNARD "You will never work again! I'll see to that." MESKWAA "If I must never work for you again? That is not what matters! Only she matters!" Lightning flashes and thunder rips through skies. The rain becomes very heavy. The mighty river is swelling. BERNARD "You will never see Maria again! And if you try, I'll have these men remove you! For good!" As Bernard commands, lightning again rips through. The river is now swelling over the banks, and over the feet of MESKWAA. The men begin to edge near him as he backs toward the river. He is nearly waist deep now in the roaring, muddy water. MESKWAA "I swear to you, all of you, that Maria and I will soon be reunited. Forever! And this village of Kaskaskia, all of it, and the homes and land around it, shall be destroyed!" At this moment, MESKWAA, sinks backward, disappearing underneath the water, and the men do not see him.
