Tibau Tavares composer guitarist and singer from the Cape Verde Islands bestows us with 7 new songs. After touring Europe in recent years with Pupkulies & Rebecca he is now appearing as a solo artist however for the recording and instrumentation he has joined forces with the production duo of Pupkulies & Rebecca Janosch Blaul und Sepp Singwald. The 7 songs were recorded during the Europe tour during gaps of the performance schedule. The resulting mini album presents him in a mature and intimate mood with music which is permeated by the traditional music of the Cape Verde Islands. The session begins with the melodia which embodies the soul of the islands in the70s. Then the epic Txoro die Maio the mourning wail of a funeral ceremony transformed to song. Tibau recalls with the following pieces Ramantxada and Morena Guitarra echoes of the music of Manu Chao. Diabo ca ta more nau tells of the devil who will never die and does without the steel string guitar as well as other instrumentation. In Palavra the power of the word is celebrated in the poetry of Portugese. In this recording the text is sung in two keys throughout the whole song which creates an interesting sound esthetic. With the repetitive and fading Tempo di azagua Tibau sings of the coming wet season which unfortunately all too often doesnt occur. What begins with a loop and an acoustic guitar dissolves into a hovering piano figure which reminds one of artists like Nils Frahm. This is no coincidence because the instrumentalist on this album Sepp Singwald is a long time friend and band member of Nils. This collection of 7 songs combines many apparent contrasts. For an album too short and for an EP too mature. Traditional songs from a long distant past bedded onto an unimposing modern sound tapestry. Classical songwriting carried by programmed percussion figures. 3 years of recording that sounds like one session. Tibau Tavares recorded 7 musicas and once again enriched us with beautiful songs.
