In this day and age of music cross-pollination, Claude VonStroke sits at the forefront of all that is good, proper, and most importantly fun.
Raised in Detroit and now based in California, Claude VonStroke is an alias created in 2005 by Barclay Crenshaw, who has become one of the most well-respected label owners and DJs in dance music. His first release, “Deep Throat”, put his imprint on the decks of DJs around the globe, but the real breakthrough came with 2005’s EP, “The Whistler/Who’s Afraid of Detroit?”. This cemented Claude’s reputation as a producer to be reckoned with. Since then, VonStroke has released three original albums, started a collaborative project with Chicago’s Green Velvet and remixed everyone from Rihanna to the Chemical Brothers. He also lays down his favorite tunes on his weekly Birdhouse radio show, which airs on Sirius XM and in over 25 countries around the world.
As the owner of the record label DIRTYBIRD, VonStroke has also built an impeccable A&R roster signing (and even naming some) acts like Justin Martin, Julio Bashmore, Catz n Dogz, Breach, Eats Everything, Shiba San and Will Clarke well before they broke out of their hometown scenes. Today, the label continues to surprise and innovate in the underground scene, releasing an enigmatic combination of house, funk, dirty-bass and electronica. Crenshaw pushed his musical boundaries even further in 2016 by releasing an experimental hip-hop album under his own name, drawing inspiration from legends like J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest to fuse his old-school hip-hop roots with beats straight out of the future.
A lot of the success of DIRTYBIRD and VonStroke can be attributed to a good attitude. He is grateful to be making music for a living and knows that the reason people go to parties is to shake their ass and have fun – and he’s more than happy to provide the soundtrack. Catch him at countless festivals, clubs or better yet at one of his own DIRTYBIRD BBQs or Campout festivals.
