Conor Jackson Smith AKA OhPlus, born in the west midlands in 1992, was exposed to an array of different sounds from an extremely young age, his taste in music being influenced by his parents tastes but mostly his primary school peers.
Growing up in town of Dudley, hiphop and reggae were the only styles of music he took the time to listen to, but whilest not listening to music he would try to imitate the beats by tapping on a desk or beatboxing (at the time he was unaware making beats with your face was beatboxing). During secondary school his music interests changed and he began listening to heavy metal and drum and bass this led to teaching himself various instruments and joined various metal bands, first doing vocals, then playing guitar then for a brief spell playing drums. Whilest in secondary school he was introduced to multiple DAW’s but settled with messing around using a single piece of software, this allowed him to create what he beatboxed digitally.
For a few years he would just play around with FL studios never completing any tracks or even attempting to, but in his last years of secondary school he began finishing beats and they just got stored on his computer and he would never let anyone listen to them. Whilest creating beats and listening to various other genres he inevitably discovered the bass heavy sound of dubstep, which he felt like he had been looking for forever, it combined the sounds of drum and bass with
the pace of reggae, which was the perfect mix.
In 2008 he went to sixth form to continue studying scientific courses, in his spare time he began producing again but this time around he began to finish tracks and showing them via YouTube under the alias ‘CJS’ taken directly from his name. At this time he had no mastering skills and his only strong point was his ability to come up with unique melodies. He continued producing under the name CJS but began teaching himself about the science behind the sounds and methods of mastering tracks.
In 2010 he began wanting more from his music and wanted to find his unique style and so changed his alias to OhPlus. He enrolled at university doing a degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology, and found time to produce more tracks and spend more time perfecting them.
OhPlus now produces multiple styles of music and mixes the styles to get unique sounds from each genre, and tries to push tracks to the limit in terms of unique sounds that you won’t get from the other producers.
