The last time Keisuke Kondo fused with Thema he dropped one hell of an EP. Be Mellow was a miniature jungle of a recording that introduced us to a dense, dark, delirious and lovely world that is so uniquely his own. This time he returns with a mysterious little box of deceptively simple house music thats as deep as it is danceableUltramarine.
Ultramarine marks a profound shift in Keisukes musical direction. Here, the glimpses of warmth that seeped through the dense thicket of sounds on his debut Thema release rise to the surface for some much needed fresh air. The title track gleans its wistful hook from Kondos meditative, melodic sphere with a slow building hypnotic structure. The heady house workout Candy Rain and the starkly downcast Message each seem to patiently scrape away at a vast undulating darkness, with brilliant rays of daylight shining through as the beats drift along. Thema contributor and Bar25 vet Beaner adds his take on this sound withnot one, but two remixes of Message. Slowing the cruise to a creep, his Skirtchaser and Skirtchaser Dub versions drown the original elements in a sea of boozy delay and paranoid, sexy ambience.
