Tropic of Cancer is the LA-based duo of Camella Lobo and Juan Mendez. Mendez is best known as Silent Servant, venerable techno producer, former Cytrax boss and core member of the Sandwell District collective. With Lobo he makes raw, visceral music in the loose tradition of minimal synth, post-punk, industrial and goth, produced with authority and a supremely evolved grasp of spatial arrangement. The Sorrow Of Two Blooms EP finds Tropic of Cancer expanding and enriching their sound, with Lobo's singing foregrounded for the first time. 'A Color' is a soaring cold wave anthem, wailing synths and dead-eyed vocals riding an insistent, minimalist drum pattern that channels Stephen Morris, Mo Tucker and early Cure. 'Temporal Vessels' invokes Hannett's gloomiest productions, crisp snares framing reverbed vocals at once seductive and threatening. With shades of Nico, Cocteau Twins and the finest 80s dream-pop, 'Dive' (Wheel Of The Law)' takes up the entire B-side, Lobo's voice looped and layered over driving, Spectorish drums. The Sorrow Of Two Blooms is the third release on Blackest Ever Black. BLACKEST004, Regis's first solo EP in 10 years, will follow in early summer....
