2010 has been a big year for Soma Records, with releases and remixes from the likes of Joris Voorn, Slam, The Black Dog, Gary Beck and Silicone Soul amongst others. The year also saw the new album from The Black Dog, as well as debut long-players from Decimal with Lost In A Dark Place and German duo Hatikvahs Synchronicity. Harvey McKay continued to build upon last years success with no less than 3 releases over the course of the year including the remixes of his 69 EP and originals in the form of Shift and The Unit. There was also another airing for Samuel L Sessions Can You Relate featuring new remixes from Slam, Joris Voorn and 2 from Anja Schneider, all breathing new life into the classic track. Meanwhile, Gary Beck has leapt in stature with the help of the massively successful track, Enough Talk. Keep an eye open for his debut album, released on SOMA Quality Recordings in 2011. Label favourites The Black Dog brought us the stunning Music For Real Airports album, following on from their previous successes, including last years Further Vexations and 2008s Radio Scarecrow. Field recordings from genuine airports are lovingly layered and blended into an ambient, experimental style that still retains the groups trademark gritty and off kilter productions; this record has to be heard to be believed. The Black Dog continues to go from strength to strength, and prove that they do not follow trends, but create them. The 2011 compilation features some of our best from the last 12 months. We kick off with Soma regulars Silicone Soul and the Kollektiv Turmstrasse remix of The Dogs of Les Ilhes. Perfect warm-up material and a great way to kick of the compilation. Next up is Slams classy, Detroit influenced remix of The Black Dogs CCTV Nation; a track that oozes Slam sophistication. Then Samuel L Sessions classic Can You Relate pops up, with a sensational remix from man-of-the-moment Joris Voorn. Taken from his debut album, Decimals optimistically titled Death Song follows in an epic Detriotian style. Long-time collaborators Funk DVoid & Sian feature twice on this compilation. The first track is the growling monster Wasp in a Wig that immediately grabs the attention with its huge, rumbling bassline. McKay caps off a fine year by having two tracks featured also. Nightwalker is a relentless, pounding slab of Techno with its huge kick and pulsating bass that is perfect for any peak-time set. After Hours, as its name suggests is an altogether less frantic track whilst retaining a tougher edge. Sandwiched in between these two numbers is a quality cut from Gary Beck entitled Enough Talk. With an epic and almost orchestral feel to it, this is definitely main room material. Funk DVoid & Sians second track Veins is a much more wobbly, dubby affair than the previous track, showcasing a different side to the duo. La Porte by Reset Robot is a classic grooving Tech-Houser, which swings along with poise featuring quirky vocal loops and buzzing synth lines. Leons remix of Lets Go Outsides Sunday Morning In The Church Of Bass is also featured, as this was definitely one of the underrated gems in our humble office throughout the course of the year. And of course no Soma compilation would be complete without a track from the Slam boys who appear here with their track Azure, expertly treated by The Black Dog. A driving bassline throughout the track alongside bleepy synth lines make this a sure-fire dance floor destroyer.
