Slant's sixth installment in its digital line showcases the work of two deep tech house masters, Justin Stride and Paul Loraine. Justin Stride has been at it for several years, appearing both solo and as part of Southern Divide on labels such as Nice 'n' Ripe, Slip 'n' Slide, ITH, and Kerri Chandler's Max Trax. Paul Loraine has appeared on the scene more recently, debuting on Danton Eeprom's Fondation Records and just released on Four:Twenty. The combination of Justin's classic house approach with Paul's loopy, minimal style makes for some lovely tunes. The title track, "Sketcher" is, as Paul puts it, "a builder". It really is the ultimate exercise in the micro-evolution of a dance track. It spends the bulk of its more-than-eight minutes subtly piling on layers in constant flux, building up to a fantastic chord riff, then breaking down again. jozif handles remix duties wisely on this one. An expert at the concept of ramping up through a tune himself, jozif pushes the original's subtleties aside to form a piece for the dancefloor. Going a shade deeper and level more complex is Justin and Paul's "Double Down". A bouncy bass line and subtle percussive groove drive along under delayed vocal and chord stabs. This tune simply exudes beauty from start to finish. Slant label boss, Let's Go Outside, gives it the dub treatment. The original is paired down to its core and sent through the dub tunnel. It's an enveloping auditory experience which sends off the EP on a deep note.
