'La Bouche' is a new EP written and produced by Monopolar, a Mexican-Peruvian-Colombian duo. The EP includes the original version, which fuses electronics with Latin American rhythms, a more minimal Monopolar reworking, plus a remix by Berlin's Nicone. Carlos 'Mono' Ramirez and Humberto Polar started Monopolar back in 2000, when they joined forces as resident DJs at La Sala Club in Bogota (Colombia). For the ten years before then, Mono had a successful career as a techno/industrial DJ, while Polar had been an active jazz guitarist from the mid 80s and had put his musical skills into experimental electronic production though the 90s. From their weekly DJ sets together, they swiftly moved to producing their own tracks, and then on to performing live. Their DJ experience gave them an instant dancefloor ethos, and to this they added a conceptual approach to their music: their Latin American origin. Away from the cliches and the obvious sampling, their tracks are deeply rooted on the syncopated backbeat that defines the afrolatino sound through a contemporary techno and house vocabulary. The original mix of `La Bouche' is a very dark, enigmatic piece of tech house, heavily based on a syncopated Latin American rhythmic, in typical Monopolar style. The origins of this percussive structure come from afro-Colombian Pacific Coast music, with sounds from native instruments like the tinajo (tub bass), guasa (a bamboo tube filled with dry seeds), and quijada (jawbone). Over this, Monopolar knit a techy soundscape of processed melodies, Cuban piano samples and a subtle French-Caribbean female vocal. The alternative version from Monopolar, `L'autre Bouche' is a stripped down, hypnotic, instrumental with a steady vocoder-like melody that builds gradually throughout the track, as sounds structures are layered on top. Nicone (the side project of Berlin based Alexander Gerlach and Sascha Braemer) provide a twisted rendition, based on a deconstruction of the vocals and some dark, spooky moments. With its deep bass-drum and beautiful synth work, their remix adds another inventive version to this creative EP package.
