House music first captured Fredrik Nybergs attention in the early 1990s, and has held it rapt ever since. Hold On is both his modern day exploration of the genre, and his collaborative journey through its many shades.
As DJ Nibc and as the founder of Trunkfunk Records, Nyberg is one of Swedens most versatile and sought-after talents. Hold On, a sleek slice of modern house, replete with string samples and sultry female vocals, is an ace in the hole for the DJ, producer and label manager, and here his latest productions receives the remix treatment from icons of the scene, Basic Soul Unit, DJ Downtown, Ian Pooley, and DJ Nibc himself.
Torontos Basic Soul Unit is no stranger to house musics charms, and here he delivers a rollicking old school re-rinse. The reverbed handclaps, airy synths and vocal stabs of the intro dont hint at the swollen wallop of a kick drum thats soon to be unleashed. It duels with a bouncing, fidgety bassline and string sounds that have been moulded, cut and pasted into signature old-school chords. The journey into nostalgia is then propelled into the present day, as mid range synths and tambourines inject some melodic texture into this peaktime monster.
DJ Downtown has mastered the art of rubberised bassline manipulations as one half of Renaissance Man, and his take on "Hold On" is a quirky cut-up affair, with he-said-she-said vocal snippets, filtered, sampled strings, and a bouncy fidget sound heralding its arrival. Channeling the spirit of French-flavoured microhouse, DJ Downtowns interpretation is a delightful mélange of leftfield funk, fairytale chimes and dancefloor flavour.
DJ Nibcs own dub mix saturates the arrangement with a thrumming bassline and jingling percussion, while layer-upon-layer of dubbed-out strings are wrestled into an uplifting minor key melody. Snatches of vocals and cool atmospherics help to create the ultimate dub mix combination of bass propulsion and melodic swing.
