Oliver Knight & Hugo Jones
Great Stuff Grooves vol. 2
Great Stuff Recordings
Following on from Anil Chawla's thumping package for the inaugural volume of Great Stuff Grooves, Oliver Knight & Hugo Jones take the reins for part two. With a recent release on the legendary GU Music (Navaja, which came with a Kaiserdisco remix), they are on fine form in early 2012.
Deja Vu kicks things off with a teasing, kick-less intro build, before dropping into severely mischievous, foot-tapping techno sexiness. The groove is tightly wound, taut and precise with plenty of swing doing its thing and getting those rhythms nice and bubbly. Bass is kept simple and commanding, and builds and drops truly enormous. This one's a weapon.
Terrorkawa treads a similar route, yet with a little more lightness of touch perhaps. Vocal chops bounce around the stereo field, white noise blasts erupt in the background and other subtle FX create the space around the heads down, chunked-up rhythms.
Knight's solo effort Hour Glass makes for the perfect finale to the EP: a huge, gut-churning slice of incessant techno with clever, intricate percussive patterns and subtle droning tones washing over the obese bass groove. This EP packs a powerful punch. Approach with caution!
