Anthem alert! Just when you thought it was safe to leave the dance floor the Shogun Audio clique draw for something absolutely, unequivocally, darn right dangerous! This time it comes from drum and bass legends Total Science as they team up with SPY for what is without doubt a killer debut 12 on Shogun; the first of many from this combo (we hope!). Gangsta, as if you couldnt guess from the name, is dark and determined to run away with your soul from the off. Its a true old-skool stepper for 2010, evoking memories of Shadow Boxing, with its creeping three tone reece bass thatll own you within seconds of it dropping from behind a hazy mist of eerie pads and a simple break. Echoed vox adds to the menace as the bass morphs ever so slightly throughout to keep it moving to complete a gem of a track. Proper sinister, moody D&B made by true thoroughbreds of the genre. In stark contrast to the above is the flipside Above The Clouds which merely wants to soothe our souls, not steal them. Whirling pads and sun-quenched synths open this one over the top of a crisp amen break and sultry female coos. A huge rush of warmth then follows as the subs kick in and a beautiful, almost whistled riff flows from the sky as if from a lost world. As the bass line develops things get a little grittier but it doesnt last as that riff cascades back in to carry the dance floor away until the end to make for a very classy cut indeed.
