Understated yet captivating, James Hunter's Evidence EP is the very embodiment of what we can come to expect from Buxton Records and a carefully considered statement of intent from label owner Adam Swain. Propelled on woodblock percussion, tight hi-hats and claps, the rigid groove underpinning titular track Evidence is sparse yet robust, providing the perfect foil to Hunter's softly hypnotic, string, laden arrangement. It's a case study in restraint and a perfect tool for warm up sets, as it builds toward a sort of controlled euphoria. By contrast, Munich native SHOW-B brings a far darker, almost sexual swing to his remix, making a much larger feature of Hunter's cleverly chosen vocal samples in the process. Thick with potential energy and eerie atmosphere, SHOW-B's remix peaks with a bouncing, ever-so-slightly dirty bassline which demands physical response. On the other hand, Late For Latte evokes more of a sunset over the river vibe; sacrificing some of the propulsive energy in Evidence for a more emotive, languid breakdown. Grandiose without being overcooked, it demonstrates a mature touch in the studio and will satisfy refined deep house palates. As the name perhaps implies, 2 Tallies & A Goonie is a good deal more whimsical, relying on an infectious groove and attention demanding bassline to bait unwary feet. With bags of character and a concise yet engrossing breakdown, it's the secret weapon B-side to Hunter's EP and not to be missed.
