Dosem
Durum
Great STuff Recordings
Techno hotshot Dosem unleashes a monster this month on Great Stuff in the form of Durum. Shuffling percussive patterns underpin a simple but hugely effective plump bastard of a bassline, with just the right amount of reverb to create a sense of space around this killer groove. An infectious, twinkling synth arpeggio dances its way into earshot, as warm chord stabs gently ooze their way into the heady soundscape, detuned in mindbending fashion for those building moments. Soaring strings, wide stereo FX and subtle automation all help build the track up to giddy, tense heights, but Dosem never allows the track to reach any cliched conclusions, instead keeping it as an atmospheric exercise in teasing. Pumping, yet deep and cool.
How about a Mark Reeve Techdub for the flip? It does exactly what it says on the tin, stripping away the delights of the original for a heads-down, muscular techno jam which revels in splashy cymbal rides, tribal lilts and murky bass throbs. One to set shoulders popping that will find favour with those on the borders of house and techno.
